Super fun!

~Sarah, Minnesota

We loved renting paddle boards from here to take down the river! It is easily accessible and the crew does an awesome job at getting you all set up with a map, life jacket, board, directions, instructions, etc. I highly recommend doing this while in the cape! It's a beautiful way to explore :)

Fun staff, great experience

~Dave, Connecticut

We enjoyed an afternoon kayaking with the help of Bass River Kayaks. Their friendly staff outfitted us, pointed out scenery and provided a waterproof map of the river and places to explore. Great prices, including reasonable pricing for cold drinks. We had a fun time, and will return on our next Cape vacation.

Great for all skill levels, friendly staff, fun activity

~Jahna, New York

We walked in as total novices and had an amazing day! The staff were amazing - friendly, knowledgeable, and patient. The waterway was calm and safe, and even the fellow kayakers were friendly as they paddled by. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to partake in an activity like this, and will definitely be returning next year for another outing on the Bass River! Thank you to the staff at Bass River Kayaks and see you next year!

Great place and friendly people

~Bits n PCs, Canada

I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Hyannis. The staff will try to get you in and out onto the lake with the least amount of fuss. They have a great inventory of sea going vessels. They have a short instructional course of the river system and the safety of boating including staying away from the shipping channel.

They also sell stuff you would require on your trip from water to waterproof bags and their rates are reasonable.

Me and my wife are first time kayakers but after the the initial launch we were pros thanks to the tricks the staff taught us. I would definitely visit them then next time I'm down there.

Wonderful day on Bass River for our first paddle board experience - excellent guidance and service. Highly recommend.

~Goodyprue, U.S.

My husband and I are senior citizens who love kayaking. We have never tried paddle boarding. We decided to give it a try and went to Bass River Kayaks in West Dennis. Everyone was wonderful and so helpful explaining the techniques to use to us. This is a family owned business (for over 30 years). Everyone was so friendly, positive, and outgoing. Our introduction to paddle boarding included a video, demonstration, and maps. They took their time explaining everything to us and were most solicitous. As we paddled on Bass River, we came across lots of kayakers and paddlers - of all ages. If you are looking for an activity on the water for the family - look no further than Bass River Kayaks. Also, in addition to the water activities, they have a nice gift store with great Cape Cod gifts to purchase. We purchased a whale for our new granddaughter!

Best bargain on the Cape

~Philip R, Massachusetts

Great deal for the money. The college kids working there are fun and friendly yet all business. They really care that you have a good time.

Clean kayaks and calm waters

~Gowds, U.S.

Group with wide age range from 50s to sub-teen.

Place was crowded when we arrived, but staff is extremely efficient and well organized, so there was practically no wait.

Extremely clean kayaks and life vests. Clear instructions. Reasonable prices. Singles and tandem available.

River waters were calm the day we went. Lots of room to spend several hours. Areas that are quite shallow for beginners who might be nervous. Lots of deep water as well for experienced kayakers.

Kudos to management and staff for being extremely well organized and helpful at every stage of the process from check in to getting in the boats to disembarking etc.

Brilliant in-spite of a family tantrum!

~Andrea, U.K.

We went out in two tandems (family of 4) and I went with the 12 year old. We couldn’t find our groove and work together so we came back in after about 40 mins. She the went out on a single instead. They were really good and happy for us to swap. A further tantrum saw the 12 year old come in as she wasn’t really strong enough to control the boat. Husband and youngest went out again and they had a ball for the last hour. The people in the shop couldn’t have been more helpful with the various arguments! Brilliant service, good kit and tuition. If you are planning on a water bound family argument and you want someone to put up with the faffing and changing here is the place!! If no plans on arguing, this is still the place! Really picturesque and loads of space to kayak or paddle board. Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

Kayak and Paddle Board FAQs

Q: How does the rental process work?
A: Simply show up to our shop (turquoise building with yellow sign out front!) between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. any day of the week (you want to be able to kayak before we close at 6 p.m. each day), park in our free parking, and a staff instructor will greet you with a typical liability waiver form. We provide properly fitting life jackets for each person, proper size paddles, tell you about beautiful Bass River, give our recommended route that time of day, and offer a map for your journey (Bass River is very easy to navigate!) We provide all kayak and paddle board instructions, answer any questions, put all proper-sized equipment in the water for you, guide you into/on the equipment, send you off, and help you when you return. You can also enjoy our shop amenities including changing room, restroom, video room, retail sections, and more. First-timers to more experience paddlers all have fun on Bass River.

Q: I've never been paddle boarding before... is it hard?

A: At least half of our customers are first-timers!  It's more challenging to learn than kayaking, but our variety of boards, and helpful tips and tricks, make it fun for the whole family!  We recommend first time paddle boarders watch the instructional video in the paddle board shop, as it speeds up the learning curve! We provide the right-sized paddle boards to each person to make sure you're comfortable and having fun on the river.

Q: Is there a minimum age requirement?

A: Paddle boarding is slow-going for children under the age of 10.  If your group is trying to explore the river, we recommend kayaking - particularly tandems (two-seater kayaks) as young kids can kick back and relax! Tow ropes are available if kids get tired in their own kayak and kid kayaks are available. Life jackets are provided for all (infant jackets available.)

Q: Is there a maximum age requirement?

A: No way! Come be our first 90-year old paddle boarder!

Q: Do you operate in the rain?

A: Generally our shop is pretty quiet when it rains.  Light rain is fine-particularly if it's passing through.  No water craft is allowed in the water if there is lightning in the area.

Q: Do I need to bring anything?

A: We recommend a bathing suit, sunscreen, sunglasses and a bottle of water.  Dozens of smart phones rest at the bottom of the Bass if Instagramming your day is a must, bring a FLOATING WATERPROOF case from home, or purchase one from our shop!

Q: Can I bring my pet?

A: Yes, please! We mostly see dogs, and pets are welcome whether it be kayaks or paddle boards. We do not have pet life jackets, so bring your own if you would like them to have one. We put down padded squares to make it comfortable for your pet too!

Our friendly crew will provide life jackets, paddles, maps, instructions, dog pads, and other helpful equipment.

Note: We are no longer at Bass River Park (40 Main St.), right next to Bass River Bridge. There are no changing rooms, electricity, or indoor restrooms at Bass River Park.  We are located at 118 Main St. (as we have been - in front of Sundancer's Restaurant) with access right on Bass River, changing room, indoor bathroom and more! We are the original kayak rental operation on Bass River, starting as Howie's Kayaks!

Free parking! Kids 5 and under free!

Indoor restroom and changing room at our only location - 118 Main St., West Dennis, MA.
