Frequently Asked Questions
Kayak and Paddle Board FAQs

Q: How does the rental process work?
A: Simply show up to our shop (turquoise building with yellow sign out front!) between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. any day of the week (you want to be able to kayak before we close at 6 p.m. each day), park in our free parking, and a staff instructor will greet you with a typical liability waiver form. We provide properly fitting life jackets for each person, proper size paddles, tell you about beautiful Bass River, give our recommended route that time of day, and offer a map for your journey (Bass River is very easy to navigate!) We provide all kayak and paddle board instructions, answer any questions, put all proper-sized equipment in the water for you, guide you into/on the equipment, send you off, and help you when you return. You can also enjoy our shop amenities including changing room, restroom, video room, retail sections, and more. First-timers to more experience paddlers all have fun on Bass River.

Q: I've never been paddle boarding before... is it hard?
A: At least half of our customers are first-timers! It's more challenging to learn than kayaking, but our variety of boards, and helpful tips and tricks, make it fun for the whole family! We recommend first time paddle boarders watch the instructional video in the paddle board shop, as it speeds up the learning curve! We provide the right-sized paddle boards to each person to make sure you're comfortable and having fun on the river.

Q: Is there a minimum age requirement?
A: Paddle boarding is slow-going for children under the age of 10. If your group is trying to explore the river, we recommend kayaking - particularly tandems (two-seater kayaks) as young kids can kick back and relax! Tow ropes are available if kids get tired in their own kayak and kid kayaks are available. Life jackets are provided for all (infant jackets available.)

Q: Is there a maximum age requirement?
A: No way! Come and be our first 90-year old paddle boarder!

Q: Do you operate in the rain?
A: Generally our shop is pretty quiet when it rains. Light rain is fine-particularly if it's passing through. No water craft is allowed in the water if there is lightning in the area.
Q: Do I need to bring anything?
A: We recommend a bathing suit, sunscreen, sunglasses and a bottle of water. Dozens of smart phones rest at the bottom of the Bass River...so if Instagramming your day is a must, bring a FLOATING WATERPROOF case from home, or purchase one from our shop!

Q: Can I bring my pet?
A: Yes, please! We mostly see dogs, and pets are welcome whether it be kayaks or paddle boards. We do not have pet life jackets, so bring your own if you would like them to have one. We put down padded squares to make it comfortable for your pet too!

Our friendly crew will provide life jackets, paddles, maps, instructions, dog pads, and other helpful equipment.

We are the original kayak rental operation on Bass River, starting as Howie's Kayaks!
