At Bass River Kayaks and Paddle Board, we’ve been helping paddlers explore the beautiful Bass River safely since the 1980s. Whether you're renting a kayak or paddle board from us, or just paddling with your own gear, safety on the water is always a top priority. Here’s everything you need to know before heading out on your adventure.
Key Safety Guidelines for Bass River
1. Paddle Along the Shoreline
Try to paddle alongside the shoreline and stay out of the main boat channel. Boats are only traveling up to 6 mph, but this helps you stay visible.
2. Life Jackets Are a Must
A U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket (Type I, II, or III) is required for all paddlers. We provide properly fitted life jackets with every kayak and paddle board rental. For everyone's safety, life jackets must be worn at all times while on the water.
3. Bring a Whistle
Each vessel must have at least one person with a whistle attached to their life jacket. We love kids, but they don’t get whistles for fun. We ask that you don’t blow the whistles unless it is an emergency. Kids under 90 lbs should only have a whistle if they are paddling alone. ‘Kids’ are considered less than 90 lbs for our life jacket purposes. The whistle should only be used in case of emergency to attract attention from others nearby.
While whistles help alert nearby paddlers, we might not hear it from the shop. If you need assistance on the water and you're renting from us, call us directly at (508)-362-5555 and we can come help you if truly needed.
5. Emergency Support
The Harbormasters from Dennis and Yarmouth regularly patrol Bass River and are there for true emergencies. For other needs, please contact us first, we’re happy to help you.
6. Paddle Within Your Comfort Zone
Whether you're solo or with a group, know your limits. Stick to routes you're comfortable with and stay together to ensure everyone returns safely.
